Summer Frolic

It’s been so dry here this summer that hint of possible precipitation gets me all worked up.  So, when there was a forecast for rain for yesterday morning, I was happy to hear it, even if it meant getting a bit damp doing my errands.  When it didn’t rain… well, grumpy-city!

Time to cave and set up the sprinkler.  I did the backyard first and about 20 minutes later, as I was putting something in the recycling on the back porch, I looked out the back door and saw a good handful of sparrows having a frolic!  It was so cute.  Unfortunately I didn’t get a good picture – the dog barked before I could get a shot.  But here is a video that looked a lot like the scene in the back:

(This is a bit long for what it is… won’t hurt my feelings if you don’t watch it all the way through!) I’m not sure why I was so taken with this.  Maybe because we are barraged on all sides daily with such ugliness, seeing something sweet and unspoiled is even more special.  I know, I’m getting a bit mawkish here, but it was just one of days!

Anything sweet and unspoiled to report in your world this week?

  1. Thanks for the video, VS – I see a version of this in the pothole puddles in our alley/ I too would rather stop and watch the birds flapping around in the puddle!

We had a Board meeting where we got through the agenda with some laughter, no quarrels, and planned a clean-up day with lots of cooperation.

  2. Usually the birds coming to the feeders are sweet and unspoiled, but with the extreme heat, we haven’t been seeing them as much. The hummingbirds are sweet, but they fight with each other a lot, a sign that they’re thinking about migration. Our neighborhood eagle flew very low over us recently while we were on the deck, an awe-inspiring sight that brings with it anxiety that he might have spotted Charlotte or one of the other neighborhood kitties. Usually Charlotte is safe under the mandevilla or hibiscus, but I still worry.

Grandson started kindergarten this week, a sweet occasion that was unspoiled by tears. We got to follow him through photos and text updates from Daughter. He got through the first day well, and the teachers gave positive reports. His favorite part of the day was lunch (of course).

  3. It wasn’t this week but several years ago we had an oscillating sprinkler going in the back yard and a flock of wax wings sat in the lilac hedge and got showered off as the sprinkler passed. They were just passing through on their way north.

  4. I was at the Fair today. Ran into a good friend by sheer coincidence and we split some cheese curds, looked at art, saw some horses, and generally had a nice summer frolic.

The all-you-can-drink milk was probably the most sweet and unspoiled thing in my day.
