Every rescue dog comes with its own set of baggage to sort through. Freya loves to chew – probably some from anxiety but more likely from being caged most of her life and now finding a whole new world of tactile sensations.
Even though I pick up the toys most nights, by 9 a.m. she has most of them out of the bin and every one is missing something – an ear, a fin, a flipper. Once she finds a way in, then she goes all in looking for the squeaker so the white toy stuffing goes all over. Our living room right now looks like a stuffy toy abattoir. Even the hard rubber toys are no match for her little shark teeth.
Unfortunately, it’s not just toys. We realized right away that pretty much anything is fair game. It took YA a bit longer to come to terms with this – she’s lost a shoe, a slipper and a pair of shorts. We’ve taken to limiting her smorgasbord a bit right now by putting up gates to keep her in a smaller area and by keeping a very close eye on her.
She is however quite stealthy and if your attention is elsewhere, she can get around you quite nicely. On Saturday I spent some time on the phone with one of my BFFs from Madison. I had been upstairs before the call and when I came down, I neglected to put up the gate at the bottom of the stairs. A few minutes into my call, I looked up and saw Freya chewing what looked like a big chunk of yellow foam. At first I figured she had gutted a stuffy but most toys these days are white fiber fill; I also didn’t see any stuffy carcasses nearby. When I took it from her and headed toward the trash, I noticed more yellow foam on the landing. I had reconfigured the dog bed situation upstairs so I thought that maybe Freya didn’t like my renovation.
When I got off the phone, I went to check it out. No trail of yellow foam to the landing. No cover to whatever the item had been. Both upstairs dog beds were intact. In fact, everything upstairs was intact. I even checked rooms with closed doors. I moved the gate to YA’s room and looked around in there. Bupkiss. I even did a slow-pan video of her room and sent it to her (she’s out of town for work) and she says it looks fine. We haven’t replaced bathroom rug yet. All my pillows are fine. Downstairs everything in order. Piano bench fine, dining room chairs fine, breakfast room dog kennel fine (I checked this twice). Not one bit of yellow foam anywhere else.
At this point I have given up looking for whatever it was in its past life. I’m figuring that in three months or so I’ll be looking for something, won’t be able to find it and a lightbulb will go off. Maybe.
Have you lost anything lately that you think you might find… eventually? Any mysteries in your life this week?
I’ve lost a lot of my optimism. I hope to find some of it in November.

I could introduce you to the young woman I met whose name is “Hope Hope!”

Yes, I mentioned it the other day.

It is a mystery to me that the characters in Downton Abbey believe that anyone can keep a secret. “You must promise not to tell anyone” is a guarantee of telling.

Oh dear! Let us know when you figure it out, VS!
Of course I’ve lost something… will hope to remember it before the day is out.
My mystery this week is how to get more singing back in my life, without having to start up something myself.

Worse than losing something is forgetting what you’ve lost.

That goes for larger concerns as well.

Hmmm, I suspect you might see whatever it was in the back yard today or tomorrow.
I’ve been troubled lately about an agate that I have/had. I wouldn’t have put it back into Lake Superior because I love it too much. I used to put it in a container where I hang my earrings. It was moved a year ago when I moved, and I haven’t seen it since.
I’m getting the finishing touches on my new patio door today.

I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna find anything coming through. First off I haven’t found anything yet and it’s been almost 36 hours. Secondly, the amount of time she had for this crime was relatively short — 20 minutes tops. So I don’t think she would’ve had time to eat the cover of something; I’m convinced that whatever this yellow foam was, it was just yellow foam. I think that’s why this is so mysterious to me is because every theory that I can come up with (and every theory that everyone else can come up with so far) I have an answer an explanation for. I really do think three months from now. I’ll probably figure it out when I go to look for whatever that yellow foam used to be.

Maybe you could just reassemble the foam.

I did actually consider that yesterday for about a minute. Too many pieces and since I can’t figure out what it was, it’s clearly nothing that has a big impact on my daily life. And now the bag is also full of white stuffing from other toys. I cleaned up the living room this morning and it really did look like a stuffy toy abattoir in there!

I gave up on stuffy toys for Maggie because I don’t want her eating that white fiberfill. She has those plushies mortally wounded within an hour. I’ve been getting tougher latex toys that she seems to really enjoy chasing. Like that cow that honks.

VS, I think that foam looks like what is inside a seat cushion. Is your couch intact?

Sofa intact, dining room chairs intact, piano bench cover intact, seat cushion in YA‘s room intact, all the pillows on my bed (& YAs) intact. All three of the dog beds in the house intact.

Oh, and both the kitty beds intact.

I was thinking it looks like memory foam.

Good Afternoon,
Following my trip I came home to all kinds of things missing:
One handicap Parking Permit–still missing and probably in a relative’s car somewhere. I still have another.
One of two garage door openers. I finally found it on top of the dresser.
Many kitchen utensils–the yellow corn cob holders were in the wrong drawer, the spatula, can opener, a favorite stirring spoon. Most of this is now located.
Lou’s hair brush-vanished
There is more, I am sure.
The mystery: the Dr’s office lack of ability to understand the need for giving clear instructions, and the need to read a chart. There is an entire story there. GRRRR.
But it is Monday. I returned to Water Aerobics this morning and now I am so tired.

my life is misplacing things and waiting for them to show up. keys wallets hammers( i own multiple hammers because i need on and cant find it so i have no choice but to buy another) headphones appear and disappear. but i am slso the worlds worst finder… yesterday i needed the vegetable peeler. looked in the drawers where it would be. looked in the most logical drawer twice asked deb if she had seen it. she said she hadnt seen it walked over to the drawer opened it and said there it is. i said where was it. she put it back in and i couldnt find it again. i was looking for the black handle and its handle is only black on the front where your thumb goes. from the back its all chrome. found it by picking everything up in the drawer i saw her put it back in … then i had to go find my cucumber which id misplaced

Misremembering what color a thing is has confounded me many, many times.

Last week I dropped a prescription bottle and it rolled under a dresser. Had to get out a yardstick and deploy the flashlight on the cell phone. Happily, along with the bottle and a generous supply of dust bunnies, the yardstick brought out an earring that I’d been missing for some months. Maybe years. I was happy to find that.
