Appliance Woes

Husband and I inherited a rather old but serviceable upright freezer from the former owners of our house when we moved to Luverne. It was a Kenmore brand. (The former owners once owned the local Sears store.) It was probably 15+ years old.

Its motor/fan ran continuously no matter what the temperature was set at. It froze things well, though. We brought a large upright freezer with us from ND when we moved. Given the way we cook, garden, and grocery shop, it is essential that we have at least two freezers in addition to the smaller one in the fridge.

I had been watching the old freezer closely, given its age, and noticed immediately last week when the fan just stopped working. After I unplugged and plugged it in again and turned the temperature control around a couple of times the fan started in again. Nothing had thawed. I knew this was a bad omen, though, so Husband and I went to our local appliance store in the morning. Yes, they had just the upright freezer we needed. Yes, they could deliver it. Would it work if they delivered it immediately? They were having a slow morning at the store. We had to race home to get there before the appliance guy did! I am glad we didn’t lose any food in the freezer and had ample time to get the new freezer cold before we emptied the old one. The appliance guy came the next day to haul away the old one.

The new freezer works well and is much bigger than the old one. This is the fourth major appliance we have replaced since we moved. There aren’t many aged appliances left here. I am happy the furnaces and A/C units are much newer. (We have two of each due to the building of an addition to the house several years ago.) I really don’t want any more major appliance expenditures for a while.

Any memorable appliance woes for you? Remember chest freezers? How many freezers do you have?
