Road Trip

When I was packing for a long weekend in Madison, I noticed Henrietta watching me from her spot on my little dresser.  Since Henrietta was a gift from my Madison friend, I thought I would take her along.  She seemed excited to be on the move.

It was overall a very lazy and relaxing weekend – we spent a lot of time sitting and reading but we did have a few outings so Henrietta could get some fresh air!

We did the farmer’s market at the capital.  Henrietta enjoyed meeting some of the vendors and smelling all the good smells.  We stopped at the library to pick up a couple of books and then had to have ice cream from Sassy Cow, a great creamery close to my friend’s house.  Henrietta met two little girls there who petted and hugged her.

My friend is seriously considering buying a Tesla so we had a loaner for the weekend.  Henrietta enjoyed the view but didn’t get to drive because she couldn’t reach the pedals.  We drove up to Lake Merrimac and took the ferry across and back.  Henrietta appointed herself “authorized personnel” but since the ferry ride is only four minutes, she didn’t get to flex that authority!

All in all a great trip although Henrietta is not a great conversationalist so the drive to and from Madison was a little quiet!

  1. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

Travel during COVID and now post-COVID has really fallen off here. In the before times my husband was a favorite travel companion. We enjoyed some mutual experiences at museums and sites, then enjoyed some solitude, going places individually. We discovered last year at the State Fair that Lou no longer walks distances easily, so that will change how we travel. But first we have to plan a trip somewhere in these new after times.

  2. I have traveled so little. Most of my traveling has been solo. I don’t argue with myself too much, or get overly tired of my own company, but I do get lonely and I’m convinced that traveling would be much better with a travel buddy. It wouldn’t help if I’m listening to an audio book though. I’m the one who gets crabby about interruptions if I’m listening to a book.

My old friend Colleen, her sister and her granddaughter, and another mutual friend and I will travel to Ireland next April. I’ve done short trips with Colleen and she’s a great friend and a very easy-going person. She’s usually up for anything and we get along very well. I think it will be a great experience and I’m looking forward to it.

    1. Wes, you stole my line again! (sort of). I was going to say Me, Myself, and My Wife. 🙂

Other than family camping trips when I was a kid, a few canoe trips with friends, and a few golf junkets 15-25 years ago, I rarely travel with others.

Oh, yeah, I also took my first Little Brother on a week-long camping trip to Grand Teton NP, a weekend camping trip at Lake Louise SP, and a BWCAW trip with friends of mine who brought their two daughters and a niece. That was tolerable because the 13-14 yr old girls totally captivated 14-year-old Zach. 🙂

  3. I haven’t traveled in years now, but my last trip would have been to Madison for WisCon, in 2013 or 2014, with my ex-hippie friend who is now in memory care. The furthest we ever went was Chicago for Worldcon, and now I wish I’d been able to go with her to Potlatch or another West Coast convention to meet some of her Bay Area friends. But, I didn’t have vacation time or the money back then, and by the time I did she had given up travel.

I will go see an ocean someday, assuming Amtrak keeps running, but that won’t be until after our elder cats have crossed. I’d never trust a cat-sitter to feed Hana (who is on a U/R diet) and I’d want my housemate/bestie along. Plenty of people like to travel alone, but I have more fun and feel safer with a friend or two.

  4. I am lucky enough to have several good friends who are also good travel mates. Over the past 13 years I have done 9 international trips with a former co-worker (we have been friends for over 40 years) and her sister and brother-in-law. They live in Tucson and Albuquerque so we don’t see each other very often. We discovered our great travel compatibility on our first trip and we intend to keep going as long as we can. A local friend and I have done one domestic and one international trip together – we also have good travel compatibility. I prefer to have a friend or family to travel with but would be willing to go on a trip for solo travelers. I can only think of two trips over the past 40 years where I was not happy with my travel mate – and those trips were long ago.

BTW – Alaska was fabulous. We are part of the minority of Alaska travelers who got to see Denali in all its glory – no clouds covering any of it. We didn’t see very many moose or whales but did see a lot of bears, including grizzly.

    1. You know… if you want to write up a little travelog and send some pictures, I bet we’d all love to see them!!!

  5. Husband and I have travelled well together over the years, done plenty of road trips, sometimes with books on CD, etc.

My sister was the one who organized most of our trip to France in 2015 – we also had her son and Husband with us. Still, I think we could travel well together if we ever tried it. There are also a couple of friends who might be compatible travel companions.

I also enjoy travelling solo, and love going by train, which I’ve written about here:

  6. Robin and I travel well together, as we both like to do the same sorts of things and favor the same destinations. I usually drive, which lets Robin knit, and we listen to podcasts rather than books. Robin would often like me to drive more slowly, not because I am exceeding the speed limit, which I’m not, but because our speed makes it harder to stop spontaneously at diversions she happens to spot along the way. I agree that our speed makes it harder to be impulsive but I am also wary of the line of other drivers piling up behind us when I am driving at the speed Robin would have me drive.

We drove out to Cedarburg and Sheboygan in June and up to Duluth last week. We will be going up to Grand Marais twice this Fall, once to spend some time up there with the grandkids and once just the two of us. We have a plan to return to Cedarburg and Sheboygan later this year for another quilt show in Cedarburg and just to hang around Sheboygan, we so enjoyed our visit there earlier.

In late May and early June I spent five days in New York City with my oldest daughter. Starting in January and with the advice of a friend of my daughter who lives in the city we planned a comprehensive itinerary. Because the trip was in part intended as a gift, the itinerary was weighted toward my interests but those destinations interested my daughter and her friend as well and were probably a different aspect of NYC than they would have sought otherwise. I made sure that we also did some things they specifically wanted to do. It was all good.

  7. I am just not in the mood to travel these days. We have to plan our traveling around the needs of the garden. That means that travel is easiest for us between October and March.

  8. I’ve done a fair amount of traveling in my day. Some of it alone, and some with various friends. I’ve done some major road and camping trips with wasband, and some with Hans, with whom I’ve also done some overseas traveling.

There are advantages to traveling alone, but there’s something to be said for sharing experiences with someone, and it can be most enjoyable if you’re compatible and share interests.

Hans and I are not particularly compatible when it comes to traveling alone, just the two of us. He is much more flexible if other people are involved as well. I want to see what there is to see in places we travel through, and he just wants to get to where we’re going. I’m much more flexible than he is, and can readily adjust and find alternatives should weather or circumstances prevent us from doing what we had planned. I also don’t scrutinize the price of everything as closely as he does, so I don’t routinely order the cheapest thing on a menu.

My traveling days are pretty much over. I have neither the energy or interest in longer road trips, and I refuse to ever get on a plane again. A day or two, fine, but two weeks without running water and a flush toilet, no thanks. Hans is headed to Will’s homestead on Friday, and won’t be coming back until Aug. 10th.
