Protocol

Husband and I attended the Twin Buttes Community powwow on Saturday. It was truly a celebration, as the community had just finished a new powwow grounds. Powwows are held in circular structures called arbors. The new arbor is rain proof, yet open, with bleachers and space for the drum circle groups and lawn chairs for observers. The new arbor has astroturf for the dancers. There is also a new rodeo grounds/ race track.

Twin Buttes has mainly Arikara and Mandan natives. It is a progressive community planning a new medical clinic, assisted living facility, and Native run boarding school. Our Native friends are so proud of the accomplishments.

There are protocols to follow at powwows, especially those involving the photographing of dancers. You must get permission from the individual dancers to take their photos. Husband was scolded for walking the wrong way around a drum circle in the arbor, as it was considered disrespectful to the drum. He apologized profusely.

I am so happy to share with Baboons actual videos taken at the powwow and posted on Facebook by our dear Natve friend. I have always refrained from filming at powwows. I figure if he posts it on Facebook for all and sundry to see and share, it is ok for me to share with all of you. You will see Men’s Grass dance. Women’s Jingle dance, and Men’s Fancy dance.

What is your favorite type of dancing? When have you violated protocols.

    1. Love Miriam Makeba.

I saw line dancing live for the first time many years ago at a work conference. A group of people I’d known through mostly phone conversations got up and danced at an event, and I was so fascinated. How do they know what all the steps are, and when to turn? How do they keep from running into each other? I would have liked to join them, but they knew all the steps, and I didn’t.

I do line dancing at the YMCA once a week now, but I’m not very good. I like the music, though.

  1. Wow! Amazing Thank you The motto from a friend she allows me to use  “Life is a shifting carpet…learn to dance.”  I live just a few miles from the Fond du Lac Ojibwa Reservation where a friend loves to Jingle Dance where I’ve only been to one or two pow wows but always enjoyed.  But more reserved than what you saw, Cynthia in Mahtowa

  2. The other Sunday morning Husband and I were at the church garden picking green beans for the food pantry. A large camper pulled up, and several people including some small boys got out. They were there for a family member’s baptism. Our garden has flower beds that are full of flowers as well as everbearing strawberries for anyone to pick and eat. I asked the boys’ dad if they could have some strawberries before they went into the church for the service. He said yes, so I and the boys hunted down some big juicy ones. We violated the protocol of always asking mom first, as the boys got covered in berry juice . Mom wasn’t happy.

  3. Wonderful.
    Cannot dance.
Most interested in cultural dance because it embodies levels of meaning as well as being an art. As a one time theater director I admire the eclectic aspect of dance performance.

  4. Oh Renee, I could watch these all day. Thanks for posting…

My favorite kind of dance is international folk dancing, and it seems my favorite dances are from Bulgaria and Albania, but I love lots of others too.

    More later, busy day.

  5. Back at “work” work and trying to get all the devices to remember who I am again…
Not to mention that new iPhone from last week…

I really like tap dancing, and the big dance numbers in movie musicals. Modern dance sometimes works for me. I’ve worked and lit a lot of dance shows, and only once do I remember missing cues because I got lost in the dance. Cool when that happens though. (the ‘getting lost’ in the dance part, not the missing cues part.)

  6. When I was a teenager I had a rosary that I had acquired somewhere, maybe at a garage sale. I wore it like a necklace for awhile, which is not the Catholic thing to do, but not being Catholic, I didn’t really care. Some Catholics think it is OK if worn with the proper reverence. I was probably short on reverence, but I thought it was a beautiful thing.
