Age And Experience

Husband started guitar and cello lessons, and also attends OT to improve an injured wrist. He enjoys all his activities and finds they are mutually beneficial.

The other day he mentioned feeling disconcerted because he suddenly realized that all his teachers, helpers, and guides are younger than he is. His cello teacher is in his late 20s. His guitar teacher is 40. He went on a nature hike on Sunday led by a very young naturalist. He tries to share experiences, music, recipes, etc, with them that they don’t know about or haven’t had. They are very interested in the things he talks about. He sees himself as having experience without expertise, while they have expertise without experience. He hopes that he and the others are all learning together. He says It’s like being an old book in the library that is still good but no one takes out anymore.

I don’t know why it took Husband this long to finally feel his age. Perhaps working full time until he was 71 had something to do with it.

What kind of a library book would you be? How old do you feel these days?

  1. I’d be an old book of poetry, with some foxing along the softened binding, and somewhat yellowed pages within. But poems are timeless, aren’t they?

It depends on what time of day it is. I feel like 66 in the morning, but by evening I feel closer to 76.

  2. Some days I feel like I’d be a phone book – people contacting me to get information or learn how to contact other people..

Or like Clyde (I’m assuming that was Clyde), maybe a collection of novellas based on some of the places I’ve lived…

Today I feel only about 50 or so…

  3. If you wanted a copy of me it would likely require an interlibrary loan.
I don’t feel 77, however that’s supposed to feel and often when I’m in a group of contemporaries, especially ones I don’t know well, I think of myself as younger than they even though I’m often in fact older.

I always find it interesting to ask people how old they are in their dreams.

  4. My email was hacked this morning. Do not open any email from me and especially do not open the attached invitation or you, too, will join the club. Delete all of the invitation email

  5. Depends on the day. When my aches and pains aren’t noticeable, I feel about 20 years younger than my age. When everything aches, I feel my age.

Library book? Too hard to think about this early in the day. 😉
Maybe a paperback (not a hardcover–I’m too laid back). Probably non-fiction because I retain trivia and worthless facts and factoids better than almost anyone I know. It’s a gift and a curse (ask my wife).
