Restoration

The other night I had a glasses mishap.  In getting out of the car at PetSmart, I was completely unorganized, trying to grab the vet records (Freya had to have vaccine proof for her class), dog treats, leash, purse, keys.  During this mess I managed to knocked my night driving glasses out of the car without realizing it.

When we got back to the car over an hour later, I noticed something a little shiny on the ground and when I reached down, saw that it was indeed my glasses.  They were a little wonky with one arm stuck and not opening.  I’m not sure what happened.  I’m pretty sure that if I had stepped on them in my kerfuffle getting out of the car, I would have noticed that.  On the other hand, if some other car had parked in the spot next to me while we were in class, it would have had to park REALLY close.  If I had to bet my own money, I somehow crunched them.

Luckily the lens seemed fine.  I was afraid to force the arm myself, so I took myself off to Warby Parker when they opened yesterday morning.  I knew they wouldn’t charge me to look at the glasses, but wasn’t sure if they would charge me for fixing them (if they could).  I was perfectly prepared to take them back home, force the arm and use duct tape until next summer, when I can get a new pair.

The technician started looking at them and twisting them without quoting me any pricing so I quit worrying.  Then he set them down and went to “ask somebody something”… my worry-o-meter clicked on again.  But he came back and went back to work.  They looked good to me; he still wasn’t satisfied.  At that point he went into the backroom and came out with a new frame, just the same as my old frame; I didn’t even know my frame was still being made – it’s been three years.  He quickly popped my lens out of my injured frames and squeezed them into the new frame.  Heated the bridge to make it fit me, cleaned up both lens and handed them over.  No charge.  I told him to be sure to send me a survey.

I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about Warby Parker before but their books of haiku are still for sale in the store and still too pricey for me but I thought I’d do quick haiku to great customer service:

Night glasses broken.

Warby Parker hits a run –

Night vision restored!

Any good customer service lately?  Or absolutely rotten customer service?

  1. I am getting excellent medical care from the Kettering Health system. They keep me informed through personal contacts and MyChart internet postings. One CT scan was read slightly abnormal in heart function which prompted the anesthesia people enough concern to delay surgery until a cardiologist could evaluate me. Cardiologists must be incredibly busy as it took some doing to squeeze me in for a first patient visit. He didn’t think there was much of a problem but “just to be sure” ordered up a stress test and MRI. The expense for the nuclear medicine part was totally unexpected so I contacted him to get a work around that would satisfy the anesthesiologist. Heard back within an hour to have just the treadmill thingy. Fortunately, my condition isn’t an urgent matter so waiting isn’t a problem. It’s my fault for being Abby Normal (Young Frankenstein).

  2. customer service is either a person who does whats right or it is a corporate culture where it is taught and ingrained into the culture. i think a list of good performers and bad performers should be available as a referrence but i discovered on amazon sales that people will plug in their own testimonials and even pay to have others write them . these should be discovered and brought to light.
ive considered warby parker but the zenna pricing sucks me in. not bad service but the experience i ran into at costco where my sister showed me what a pleasure customer service can be.

  3. Well, I was on an airplane last week. That is pretty much guaranteed poor service and discomfort. The flight over there was particularly bad.

OT: After a real scare this week, husband awoke this morning much more oriented and back to himself. I have an appointment right away this morning, then I will try to check in later today, but it is a busy day here and I may not get back until later. But as of 7:33am, things are better in our world.

      1. I’m still telling the story of the completely self service kiosk target field — when I also had to scan my own stuff and pay for it on a computer screen, it asked me for a tip. Ha.

  4. There is a very nice woman, Kim, who works at In the Dog House where I take Maggie for daycare and grooming. The grooming is insanely expensive. I need to price some other places, but I really like the people at In the Dog House and they do a fantastic job, so I don’t really want to go anywhere else. Anyway, Kim is very pleasant and friendly. She goes the extra mile and sits on the floor to greet Maggie and make Maggie feel comfortable. She works at the front desk, greeting people and dogs, scheduling appointments for grooming or daycare, and selling things from the store. She doesn’t get any tips – those are for the groomer and the trainer – but she deserves one. She’s always busy, but smiling and happy. That place costs me a ton of money every month, but they do such a good job and I really like them.

  5. I just got a pair of Warby Parker glasses. I ordered them online. I’ve never done that before, and I was a little nervous about it. I tried them on when they arrived by mail, and they didn’t fit well at all and were very crooked. I knew I’d have to take them to a WP store and have them adjusted. The nearest WP store is in the mega mall. I went there very quickly on Monday after morning knitting and before picking Maggie up from daycare. I’m not a fan of the monster mall, so I wasn’t sure where the store was. I wanted in and out as quickly as possible. Fortunately there is a map of the store online. I was able to park nearby, walk in and go directly to the store. My glasses were adjusted, but not perfectly. I can wear them now, but they sit a little bit crooked on my face. I’ll probably have to go back sometime. I’m not nervous now that I know where it is. I like Warby Parker frames too. I like the frame in the header photo.

    1. YA gave me grief about these frames. Once it was because they were old-fashioned and once because I was too old to wear that style. I can’t win. I told her it doesn’t matter because the only time I wear this particular set of glasses is in the car while I’m driving at night and not even all of that time because if I’m driving at night to someplace that I’ve been to 1 million times, I don’t wear the glasses then. So nobody sees these glasses except me …and it’s dark.

        1. I haven’t had to wear glasses for a few decades, but when, about 6 months ago, I needed some mild correction so as to be able to decipher speed limit signs on the Interstate, I was told that the frames I chose had to be acceptable and attractive to people who look at me. What I might feel about them was inconsequential.

  6. At Husband’s monthly medical appt. the other day, I mentioned to the nurse how I’ve been on the phone twice now with our supplemental insurance, BCBS Advantage, to find out why our copay is so high, when it used to be quite reasonable before we switched insurance companies. She offered to talk to the clinic’s business office to see if they were using the right billing code. It turns out they are, but she called me the next day and explained more details that may (or may not) be helpful. I was impressed how she went out of her way to help, in her very busy schedule.

  7. Husband often says he should get paid for the time he spends on the phone dealing with customer “disservice.” I honestly can’t think of many good experiences we’ve had recently. Amazon cancelled an order for my special German sponges with no explanation. They done that before. Our internet speeds are equivalent to the speed limit on our residential street, but our provider does nothing to improve them. And on and on.

The people at Costco are always friendly and helpful and the people in their optical department are wonderful. That’s the only positive customer service I can think of at the moment.

  8. I’m having a patio door installed today. I hired a local young man to do it. He ordered the door, did all the work with the lumber yard, set up delivery for me, and has been here all day. He’ll have to come back to finish on Monday, since there are some things he can’t get done today. His fiancée has been his coworker all day. They’re getting married in October. She’s going to take his name after they’re married. Her new, full, married name will be Hope Hope. They’re really a nice young couple – hard-working too. I hope they don’t get sick of each other due to working together.
