Snacks

Yesterday I finished cooking a large pot of brodo, a turkey/beef stock from The Splendid Table cookbook. It calls for 9 pounds of turkey wings that simmer for 14 hours with lots of vegetables and 4 pounds of beef shank. I get about 3 gallons of stock from it.

I get my turkey wings from a butcher shop that gets a case of them for me directly from the meat packing plant. They are enormous and meaty. After simmering for 14 hours, however, there is not much taste left in the meat. I can’t make myself throw them away, so I freeze the meat in small bags for our dogs. They get a few pieces of the turkey in their daily kibble. They love it.

They also get roasted butternut squash and beef protein sprinkles every day in their kibble. I roast the squash with our Turkish olive oil brushed on it. At least once a day they get gullet strips, and they have collagen chews to gnaw on. Yes, we have terribly spoiled terriers. They get so excited it is hard to stop since they seem so happy.

I think we spoil our dogs with snacks because we spoil ourselves with good food. They don’t seem to get fat on these snacks, but they are busy, active dogs who race around and burn off lots of calories. By the end of the day they collapse and sleep soundly all night.

What are your favorite snacks? How do you spoil the people and creatures you love? How are you spoiled?

  1. Cards. Food. Made brownies for the guys who came to finish our fence yesterday.

Freya is wildly spoiled where treats are concerned. I’m pretty sure there are at least 10 different kinds of dog treats in her cabinet. Several friends gifted her with treats when she joined the family and since she liked them all, I have continued getting those types for her! She is HIGHLY food motivated.

  2. I do like lime tortilla chips, and any of the European cookies (one brand is Benton) that I find at Aldi.
But my favorite is Scotcheroos, or Peanut Butter Crispy Treats – however you call them.
Well, and homemade popcorn like Husband used to make. May have to revive that…

I spoil Husband by doing things around the house that he would be able to do, but it’s faster for me to do, so I keep doing it. Sigh.

    Thinking…

  3. Maggie has had such digestive problems since she was a little puppy that I’ve learned to keep her on her veterinary prescribed diet. She gets Purina HA hydrolyzed protein kibble. I’ve tried other kibble and quickly returned to the prescription due to her upset tummy. Several weeks ago I started buying inexpensive, salt-free rice cakes and crumbling them into her kibble, or steaming white rice and mixing it in. I also give her a packet of FortaFlora probiotic everyday. I sprinkle it on her kibble and moisten it all. She loves it, but it’s all she gets. I’d like to mix in a little squash, but I’m terrified about what might happen. She has prescription treats too. She also gets collagen sticks. She loves them, and they don’t seem to bother her digestive system. I’d just love to give her a little cooked chicken or turkey, but I don’t know how that would affect her.

OT: I loved yesterday’s post and discussion.

  4. I like more snacks than I should admit too. Grapes are always good. And apple slices when i’m programming lights. But then there’s the Peanut M&M’s (in the fridge) and chocolate covered peanuts (also in the fridge). Sometimes it’s salty snacks that I crave.
Spoiling? Making dinner, doing laundry, isn’t that how we show we love someone? Hauling in the recycling. Rubbing her feet or shoulders.
The dogs it would be an extra bacon treat in the morning. They have their routine; they know they’re getting some meat in the morning because that’s how Humphrey gets his pills. Then the bacon treat. At night it’s the crunchy treats. Popcorn is spoiling them I guess.

Am I spoiled? Well, not to the point of causing a big head.

  5. Do any of you hide your favorites, to make sure they’re there when you need them?? I have a space where the chocolate lives, in amongst the dishtowels . (I blame my mom, who always had a stash of Brach’s Chocolate Stars stashed in a cupboard somewhere…)

  6. My favorite snack depends on what I’m in the mood for. I don’t eat a lot of candy, but I’m hooked on Trader Joe’s jelly beans. They are my mid-afternoon snack on work days. I also love cookies, especially Walkers shortbread and Husband’s triple-ginger cookies.

I suppose I spoil my people with cooking and baking. Since my mom stopped baking, I like to bring cookies and other baked treats to my parents.

Charlotte (cat) is picky and rejects most cat treats, but she loves her Inaba Churu snacks–a lickable treat in a little tube. When I was younger and more ambitious, I used to make homemade wet food for our two cats with a recipe I got from a cat book–cooked chicken livers pureed with Cream of Wheat. I doubt Charlotte would eat it, and I don’t see chicken liver in the grocery stores anymore. It’s probably something you have to ask for (sigh).

  7. Every couple of months I get a haircut at a salon near the Riverview Theater. Their box office opens at 1:00, and I have just enough time before my haircut to stop in and get popcorn to go.

Usually after the haircut I get ice cream.

  8. Husband felt spoiled yesterday after I made some special hot cocoa for him while he was working in the garden in a cold wind harvesting basil and coiling up and putting away the hoses.
