The last couple of days we’ve been dealing with some upset doggie tummies. Not sure of the cause but both are on a special tummy diet – pumpkin, sweet potatoes, rice, little bit of brown gravy. Both seem to like it and appear to be on the road to recovery.
What foods do you like when you’re feeling under the weather?
Husband and I differ about eating veggies. He believes he absolutely needs green vegetables at every meal, and says he feels unwell if he doesn’t. I feel fine without them. I eat skyr for breakfast every day, and I would feel unwell if I didn’t. When we are under the weather we drink the Italian broth I make from turkey wings and oxtails. I make sure I always have some in the freezer.

When I’m healthy: chicken noodle soup. When I’m feeling punky: chicken, chicken, chicken noodle soup.

Ginger Ale when sick.
I drink a lot of regular white milk. I think if I miss a day or two then I’m not feeling good.

At one time, ginger ale was often served to hospitalized patients. At one time in England, hospital patients and pregnant women were served Guinness Stout. It was thought to be a good source of iron.

I vote for that.

First I would drop the sweets… and make sure to have tea instead of coffee.
Then some combination of the above – maybe make a cabbage or vegetable soup. I keep a box of Matzo Meal, and sometimes make matzo ball soup (in a chicken broth), which is very soothing.

Rise and Shine Baboons,
We have had sick dogs here, too. Ours react to the stress of the trip to Az and we were able to plan ahead, then intercept the worst of the symptoms. Then yesterday Lucky was diagnosed and treated for a UTI—her lady parts are recessed, so she gets this stuff. I am a dog nurse.
When I am ill I eat soup of almost any type. After my knee surgery I lost my appetite, and soup was the cure.

I am not sick often enough to have devised a menu for it. When I am unwell, I eat whatever sounds good. If nothing sounds good, I don’t eat.

I’m pretty boring when I am unwell. Toast with a lot a lot of butter. And Orange Crush.

I don’t drink soda when I am healthy so I would be unlikely to take up ginger ale or any other sweetened beverage when I am sick.

I had a real issue with my second wasband when he was ill. He was really a big baby about it, always. Once he kept asking for Cheerios but then he’d only eat about 2 tablespoons before he would say “I can’t eat any more” (imagine whiny voice). After a day or so of this, I got a little tiny Peter Rabbit baby cup and put 2 tablespoons of Cheerios in there with some milk. He did not think that was funny.

You know what else I like if my tummy is upset? Hot water with a little vanilla syrup in it. Just to give it some flavor.

Actually that sounds good right now.

When I have a cold I like peppermint tea with honey. Soup is always appealing, especially tomato soup. And for some reason cottage cheese calls to me when I don’t feel well.
And every so often I get a craving for malt-o-meal.

Malt-o-Meal is a favorite of mine too. Also Ralston Hot Cereal.

I usually drink tea with lemon and mint instead of my regular coffee.

I always go with the old chicken soup. But really, my strategy is to eat a lot and often. It seems to work a cold out of the system or at least, that’s what I tell myself so I can eat more. Haha. Either way, I’m good!

Always good to have a strategy!
