I mentioned to YA that I have a trip to Maui in a few months. She told me I should “swing over” to Lana’i while I’m there to visit the Cat Sanctuary.
Lana’i isn’t that easy to “swing over” to but if it were just me, I’d head on over.
If money/space were no object, how many pets would YOU have?
Last Friday I got off work at noon and spent the next 4 hours weeding my brains out. We have a 20 X 10 foot garden bed on the north side of the drive way that contains perennials and vegetables like beets, turnips, chard, carrots, and celeriac. The weeds were horrible. Not long after I finished weeding, the most lovely, gentle rain began, with no wind or hail. It was perfect.
When have things worked out just right for you?
Well, the news from the Supreme court is discouraging. #45 rallied yesterday in Fargo. The weeds in my garden are horrendous. On the other hand, there was a gorgeous, huge moon last night. My cats are charming, and I am a part of several communities that are supportive and comforting. To cap it all off, in 1820, on this date, the tomato was proven to be non poisonous by a Colonel Robert Gibbon, who ate a tomato on steps of the courthouse in Salem, New Jersey.
How do you keep going in trying times? How has scientific experimentation (a la Colonel Gibbon) improved your life?
Since February we called the plumber three times to fix leaky pipes, faucets, and toilets. We are lucky to have a very competent plumber who works evenings and weekends and doesn’t charge extra. He even likes our cats, who try to help him as much as they can.
Tell about heroic repair people you have known. Tell about when repairs haven’t worked so well.
It’s raining and thundering right now. The Irish Setter is burrowing into me on the bed, shaking and panting. The shepherd mix is also on the bed, eyeing the other dog carefully. As soon as the setter moves, the shepherd jumps up to police the situation.
What did your parents tell you about lighting and thunder when you were a kid?
The Rainbow near my house has recently shut down. Last weekend I went to another store in the shopping center and saw all the grocery cart corrals lined up together. It was like they were all sitting in a big meeting room, listening to a motivational speaker!
What’s the weirdest party you’ve ever been to?
I have a medium-sized yard. Last fall YA and I raked up 22 bags of leaves and yard waste. Always more bags than the rest of the neighbors. How can we possibly have this much stuff to be bagged up now? And we’re not even finished!
What do you have way too much of?
The weather is improving, and it is warming up. Today is Arbor Day. We will be working this Saturday in our church’s new contemplative garden laying edging pavers and laying out garden beds. The irrigation system went in on the 26th.
How do you plan to commemorate Arbor Day? Any yard work or green thumb projects planned?
We are in Savannah now. The weather is sunny and in the 70′ and 80’s. I am stuck in meetings all day, so husband spent our first day exploring the historic area of Savannah by himself. He took a trolley ride that took him all over the city with a tour guide who explained the sights and scenes. Then he explored a little on his own. I like guided tours. I know some people like to explore on their own. There is sure a lot to see here.
How do you like to get to know a place? Any memorable guides who you have encountered
I moved to Minnesota in 1974 and at the end of my first Minnesota winter, it snowed 11″ on April 8. At Carlton we celebrated by having a snow sculpture contest on The Bald Spot. So I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked that it’s snowing right now. But really?
